2011 Fantasy Projections, No. 37: Why Florida Marlins’ Josh Johnson Is An Elite Pitcher

Last June, I made an audacious statement that attracted some criticism: Josh Johnson had been (and would continue to be) better than Ubaldo Jimenez. At that point in the season, both Johnson and Jimenez boasted sub-2.00 ERAs, but Johnson trumped Jimenez in FIP, xFIP, K/9, BB/9, WHIP, O-Swing rate, contact rate, first-strike rate and swinging strike rate. From that point on, Jimenez posted a 3.98 ERA, while Johnson totaled a 2.98 ERA. To be fair, Johnson was shut down in early September with shoulder inflammation and back tightness (though he has since worked with a chiropractor and former World’s Strongest Man competitor in an attempt to stay healthy in 2011)...

The Sub-2.50 ERA Curse: Why Hernandez, Halladay, Buchholz, Johnson & Wainwright May Regress in 2011

Last March, I conducted a study on pitchers who’ve posted a single-season ERA of 2.50 or less since 2000. (You can read that article here.) In my research, I made several interesting discoveries. First, there were 11 different sub-2.50 ERA seasons between 2000 and 2005. Between 2006 and 2008, however, there were none. 2009 saw four such pitching performances, as Zack Greinke (2.16), Chris Carpenter (2.24), Tim Lincecum (2.48), and Felix Hernandez (2.49) all posted ERAs below 2.50. This recent trend supports the notion that hitters are no longer juicing, and thus pitchers are becoming more dominant. (Keep this in mind as you prepare for your 2011 fantasy drafts.)...

Why Florida Marlins’ Josh Johnson Is Better Than Colorado Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez

Ubaldo Jimenez has been absolutely filthy through 16 starts this season, going 14-1 with a Bob Gibson-like 1.83 ERA. The 26-year-old flame thrower even tossed a no-hitter back on April 17. Likewise, Marlins‘ starter Josh Johnson boasts a 1.83 ERA and 0.96 WHIP through 16 starts, but hasn’t gotten the luck or the run support that Jimenez has. While Colorado’s ace has struggled in his last two starts, Johnson has continued to dominate. After a closer look, it’s become obvious that Johnson has out-dueled the N.L. Cy Young favorite through the first three months in nearly every major pitching category...

Fantasy Baseball Insiders Tonight 5/18: The Demise of Brewers’ Closer Trevor Hoffman

Today’s edition of Fantasy Baseball Insiders Tonight features not one, but two games scored by the Insider himself… Game No. 26 – Minnesota Twins vs. Toronto Blue Jays • Blue Jays’ starter Shaun Marcum continued his impressive comeback from Tommy John surgery, limiting the Twins to one run on five hits and two walks in seven strong innings Tuesday afternoon. Despite Minnesota’s best efforts, Marcum continually worked out of trouble to preserve his big lead...

Ticket Liquidator

Interest is peaking among those who seek cheap tickets to MLB games, especially the stadiums that fill up fast and sell out quick like Fenway Park seats, cheap Yankees baseball games and the big one in July; the 2011 MLB All-Star Game in Phoenix. Before that, though, don't forget to check out these seats at the College World Series 2011. As we head into spring, there are other sports hitting their high notes, including cheap games at the NBA finals, action in the octagon at a MMA Fight Night and other fight tickets including the 2011 boxing schedule.
