2011 Fantasy Projections, No. 7: How Will Tampa Bay Rays’ Evan Longoria Fare Without Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena?

2010 saw Evan Longoria post the lowest home run total of his career (22), while his slugging percentage dropped for the third consecutive season. During the off-season, the guys who hit in front of (Carl Crawford) and behind (Carlos Pena) Longoria last season signed with the Red Sox and Cubs, respectively. Looking forward to 2011, it’s any one’s guess as to who will fill the holes left in the Rays’ lineup. While these factors may scare off some fantasy managers, it’s important to understand how good Longoria has been in his first three seasons in the majors. Despite missing 40 games in his 2008 rookie season while the Rays delayed his arbitration clock, the California native has posted career averages of 88 runs, 27 HRs, 101 RBI, 10 steals and a .297 batting average, placing him in elite company at the very thin third base position. Despite the seemingly “down” year in 2010, Longoria has made significant strides in certain areas of his game over his first three seasons...

Fantasy Baseball Insiders Buy Or Sell: Troy Glaus

After nine weeks of play, Braves’ first basemen Troy Glaus is tied with Albert Pujols and Evan Longoria for fifth on the major’s RBI leader board with 44. Given his age and supposed injury propensity, most fantasy managers are looking to turn a profit on Glaus’ hot start. Instead, they should be seeking his services, as the former UCLA Bruin’s torrid start is no fluke. Prior to appearing in just 14 games last season due to shoulder surgery, Glaus averaged 502 at-bats in the previous four seasons (‘05-’08). Now that he’s played in all of Atlanta’s 57 games this season, it’s safe to say those injury concerns are behind him...

Fantasy Baseball Insiders Tonight 4/9: Rays’ David Price Beats Yankees In Season Debut

New day, new insider. Fantasy Baseball Insiders’ sixth game of the season was the season opener at Comerica Park featuring the Tigers and the visiting Indians. Game No. 6 – Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers Friday’s game featured few hits, few strikeouts and one enormous error by third baseman Jhonny Peralta. Grady Sizemore finished with two hits and a stolen base. One of the hits was a rope off the wall for a triple. Grady is now batting .316 on the season and just may be on his way back to prominence...

Fantasy Baseball Insiders Tonight 4/6: Orioles’ Adam Jones, Matt Wieters Homer in Season Debut

As part of our journey to watch and score 162 games this season, Tuesday night featured the Orioles/Rays opener in Tampa. Game No. 3 - Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays Adam Jones went 3-for-5 with a single, double, and HR. Matt Wieters went 2-for-4 with a HR to lead off the sixth. In his first at-bat of the game, the soon-to-be 24-year-old crushed a ball that forced B.J. Upton to the wall in straight away center. I’ve been saying this since last April, Wieters will be a top-25 fantasy player by the end of this season...
