Top-tier talents such as Chase Utley (86 games), Dustin Pedroia (123), Ian Kinsler (150) and Rickie Weeks (204) have all missed significant time due to injury over the last four seasons. Heck, even the likes of Brian Roberts, Aaron Hill, Freddy Sanchez and Carlos Guillen have missed time in recent seasons.
The only stalwart?
This year, there are four catchers widely accepted as top-50 players: Joe Mauer (ADP 20.59), Brian McCann (29.93), Victor Martinez (29.95) and Buster Posey (45.46). Yet despite this general belief, it’s highly unlikely that any catcher will finish the season as a top-50 player.
Andy Behrens recently dug up some mind-boggling numbers that explain this theory. To paraphrase, only two catchers in the past decade (Javy Lopez in 2003, Joe Mauer in 2009) have finished inside the top-50 overall according to Baseball Monster rankings. In five seasons since 2001, one or zero backstops have finished in the top-100 overall.
So why do we continue to draft catchers so high?
Word hit Wednesday morning that Cardinals’ ace Adam Wainwright has been flown back to St. Louis to have his right elbow examined by team doctors.
The Cardinals (and fantasy managers) across the country are holding their collective breaths, but it’s expected that Wainwright will undergo Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him for 12-18 months.
This is a devastating blow to not only the Cardinals, but those who own Wainwright as well. The 29-year-old was among the top-ranked starting pitchers this season, checking in as the No. 2 pitcher (27th overall) in our rankings…
Opening Day and has come and gone, and while it’s clear guys like Jason Heyward will make a fantasy impact this season, it’s also important to keep an eye on the lesser-known sleeper candidates. With that in mind, I present to you the Fantasy Baseball Insiders’ 2010 All-Breakout Team!
Wednesday’s post covered this year’s All-Surprise Team. Today, we’re going to visit the opposite side of the ranks as I present the 2009 All-Bust Team.
While compiling this list, I did my best to exclude players who spent a significant amount of time on the disabled list, as I feel it’s unfair to hang the “bust” label on players due to injury….
