2011 MLB Spring Training Team-By-Team Injury Report

To help keep fantasy managers on top of injuries this spring, Fantasy Baseball Insiders has launched a team-by-team injury report. This list will be updated every night so you can stay up to date on current injuries. Bookmark this page for an easy return. This is a must have as you prepare for your upcoming draft!

Baltimore Orioles:
- Brian Roberts had a precautionary X-ray taken of his stiff neck earlier this spring, but it was found to be unrelated to the injury which forced him to miss 103 games last season. He made his spring debut last Tuesday, and is expected to be in the lineup on Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Derrek Lee has been limited while recovering from offseason thumb surgery. Manager Buck Showalter said Lee is scheduled to make his spring debut on Saturday. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
- Justin Duchscherer declared himself “perfectly fine” after throwing off the mound Thursday. It felt like my hip was 100 percent.” He may throw live batting practice Saturday, though no word yet on when he might pitch in a game. March 2, 11:15 a.m. CST
- Koji Uehara received a cortisone shot in his right elbow Thursday, but expects to be back on the mound within a week. “It’s not even serious,” Uehara said through an interpreter. “I’m not concerned about it.” March 3. 1:00 p.m. CST
Boston Red Sox:
- Adrian Gonzalez took batting practice again Tuesday as he continues to increase his workload after undergoing shoulder surgery this offseason. He hopes to make his spring debut later next week. Barring any setbacks, he’s expected to be ready for Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Josh Beckett was struck in the head by a fly ball during batting practice on Monday and has experienced mild concussion symptoms. On Tuesday, Beckett told reporters he was feeling much better. He’s been scratched from his scheduled Thursday start, but is expected to throw three simulated innings on Friday and make his next schedule start on Tuesday. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
New York Yankees:
- No significant injuries
Tampa Bay Rays:
- J.P. Howell is working his way back from shoulder surgery. He’s expected to pitch in the minors sometime in April with the hopes of returning to the Rays sometime in May. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Jeremy Hellickson was diagnosed with a mild hamstring strain earlier this spring. He threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday, and is expected to pitch in a game sometime in the next few days. Barring any setbacks, he’ll be ready for his first start of the season. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Reid Brignac said Monday the sorness in his groin is gone. He should be back in the lineup within the next few days. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Toronto Blue Jays:
- Scott Podsednik has been sidelined due to plantar fascists, but is expected to appear in a game by the end of next week. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Aaron Hill has been limited this spring by a sore left quad, but has performed full baseball activities and is expected to play on Wednesday. He should be good to go by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Travis Snider has been sidelined for two weeks with a ribcage injury he suffered while playing golf. He took batting practice this weekend, and is hopeful to be playing in a game this weekend. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Kyle Drabek was scratched from his scheduled Monday start due to a stiff neck. He’s expected to rest for a few days and take the mound this Saturday. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
- Dustin McGowan has undergone two shoulder surgeries since last appearing in the majors in 2008. The Blue Jays are taking a cautiously optimistic approach with him this season. McGowan is expected to begin 2011 in the minors to build his arm strength before possibly joining Toronto in late April. March 2, 8:00 a.m. CST
Chicago White Sox:
- Jake Peavy made his first start of the spring last weekend and reported normal sorness the next day. He is recovering from surgery to repair a torn lat muscle, and hopes to be ready by the start of the season. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Cleveland Indians:
- Grady Sizemore is working his way back from micro-fracture surgery on his left knee last June. He has taken batting practice, but is expected to begin the season on the DL as a precaution. Barring any setbacks, he’ll be activated in mid-April. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Detroit Tigers:
- Carlos Guillen is working his way back from micro-fracture surgery. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said “it was a little sore” last week. His status for Opening Day remains doubtful. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Jose Valverde has been sidelined with flu-like symptoms for nearly a week. He’s expected to be ready for Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Maggloio Ordonez was held out of this weekend’s game due to a hamstring injury. He’s expected to be back in action by the end of the week. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Kansas City Royals:
- Jason Kendall is well ahead of schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery. He’s already been cleared to throw, but Opening Day remains an unlikely target date. He was originally expected to be out until June. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Minnesota Twins:
- Joe Nathan made his spring debut Tuesday as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. The Twins are pleased with his progress, and he hopes to be the team’s closer on Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Michael Cuddyer had a wart removed from his left foot Tuesday. He’s expected to miss a week or two, but should be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Justin Morneau played in his first spring game Tuesday, hitting a bases clearing double in his second at-bat. He is hopeful to be ready by Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Joe Mauer is working his way back from offseason knee surgery, and has taken batting practice and participated in team workouts. There is no timetable, however, for game action. He’s expected to be fully recovered in time for Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Los Angeles Angels:
- Kendry Morales has no timetable for when he’ll be ready for game action as he recovers from a broken leg. Mike Scioscia remains optimistic, however, that he’ll be ready for Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Oakland Athletics:
- Cliff Pennington is expected to miss the first week or two of spring games as he works his way back from offseason shoulder surgery. The A’s are optimistic about his availability for Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Rich Harden was shut down after experiencing pain in his lat muscle area earlier this spring. As of Sunday, he was expected to take another week off. His status (as usual) is unknown. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Seattle Mariners:
- Franklin Gutierrez is awaiting the results from tests on a stomach issue that has bothered him since last spring. There is no timetable for his return. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- David Aardsma is recovering from hip surgery. He walked unassisted last week, but there is no timetable for when he’ll begin throwing. He’s expected to miss the first few weeks of the season. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Miguel Olivo suffered a strained groin Saturday. His status for Opening Day is in doubt. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Texas Rangers:
- Brandon Webb threw another bullpen session Tuesday as he continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury that has limited him to just one start over the last two seasons. His status for Opening Day remains in question. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Adrian Beltre has been sidelined due to a strained calf, but the Rangers believe it’s just a two week injury and expect him to play by March 10. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Scott Feldman is recovering from micro-fracture surgery last November and has yet to throw off a mound or begin running. The Rangers don’t expect him to be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Elvis Andrus was held out of Tuesday’s game with a sore back, even though he wanted to play. Doesn’t sound like a big deal. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Atlanta Braves:
- Kris Medlen underwent Tommy John surgery last August, and began soft-tossing a baseball two weeks ago. He’s unlikely to return before August or September, at the earliest. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Chipper Jones has started the last three games as DH as he recovers from offseason knee surgery. He made his first start at third base Thursday and is on track to be ready by Opening Day. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
Florida Marlins:
- Mike Stanton took batting practice Monday for the first time since suffering a strained his right quad two weeks ago. The Marlins hope he’ll be ready by Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Ricky Nolasco has been limited by a jammed thumb this spring, but is expected to make his first spring start around March 13. March 2, 11:15 a.m CST
- Chris Coghlan is not expected to play in back-t0-back games until later this spring as he recovers from offseason knee surgery. On Thursday, manager Edwin Rodriguez said Coghlan would not play in a road game for at least two weeks. He remains the favorite to bat leadoff for the Marlins on Opening Day. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
- Omar Infante was sidelined for six weeks before spring training while recovering from an emergency gall bladder surgery. He’s a little behind, but is expected to be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
New York Mets:
- Carlos Beltran has been shut down for at least four to five days after being diagnosed with tendinitis in his left knee. He still hopes to be ready for Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Johan Santana has already begun playing catch as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. The Mets hope he’ll be ready to pitch by late June or early July. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Philadelphia Phillies:
- Chase Utley has been sidelined with patella tendinitis. There is no timetable for his spring debut. General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has said he’d like Utley to play 10 games this spring. Utley has been shut down from all baseball activities except hitting. We’re starting to question his availability for Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Domonic Brown underwent successful surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand on Tuesday. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Washington Nationals:
- Stephen Strasburg had two throwing sessions from 45 feet two weeks ago, and hopes to throw off a mound before the end of spring training as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. He may return at some point in September, but 2012 is more realistic. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Chien-Ming Wang has impressed the Nationals in his recovery from shoulder surgery. He’s expected to pitch on Friday, and could be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Chicago Cubs:
- No significant injuries
Cincinnati Reds:
- No significant injuries
Houston Astros:
- Jeff Keppinger is expected to miss the first six weeks of the season after having foot surgery in January. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Jason Castro is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. A timetable for his return will be more clear after surgery. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
Milwaukee Brewers:
- Corey Hart is still feeling sharp pains after straining his left oblique last weekend. “I get up hoping it’ll feel better but it’s the same,” he said Tuesday. His status for Opening Day could be in doubt. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Jonathan Lucroy underwent surgery to repair a broken pinkie last week. His status for Opening Day is questionable. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Pittsburgh Pirates:
- No significant injuries
St. Louis Cardinals:
- Adam Wainwright underwent Tommy John surgery on Monday to repair two torn elbow ligaments. The Cardinals expect him to return in 12-to-15 months, but Wainwright hopes to be ready by this time next season. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Chris Carpenter felt a twinge in his hamstring during a bullpen session Sunday, but completed a succssful session on Tuesday. He is likely to start Opening Day. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
- Lance Berkman will DH the next few games as he tries to rest a sore elbow. The Cardinals hope the issue subsides in time for Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- David Freese isn’t expected to start any games before Thursday as he recovers from offseason surgeries on both ankles. He will likely sit out one every three games early, but should be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
Arizona Diamondbacks:
- No significant injuries
Colorado Rockies:
- Ian Stewart was diagnosed with a low-grade MCL sprain last week, and will be fitted for a brace in the next few days. “It shouldn’t be much longer,” Stewart said on Wednesday. He should have plenty of time to recover before Opening Day. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
- Aaron Cook played catch Tuesday after having his Saturday start pushed back due to shoulder soreness. The Rockies are concerned about his shoulder strength, and will require him to throw live batting practice before pitching in a game. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Ubaldo Jimenez was scratched from his Wednesday start due to an infected thumb muscle. He’s expected to make his next scheduled start Monday. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
- Troy Tulowitzki has been diagnosed with a sore heel. He should return to action in a few days. March 8, 2:00 p.m. CST
Los Angeles Dodgers:
- Ted Lilly retired all six batters he faced in a ‘B’ game Thursday morning. He was originally scratched from his Wednesday start due to flu-like symptoms. He should be fine. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
San Diego Padres:
- Kyle Blanks is recovering from Tommy John surgery, and isn’t expected to be ready to return until late May or early June. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Heath Bell was sidelined earlier this spring due to a strained calf, but could pitch in a game later this week. He’s expected to be ready by Opening Day. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
San Francisco Giants:
- Brian Wilson has yet to appear in a game due to a back injury, but he doesn’t expect it will hold him back much longer. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Andres Torres sat out Monday and Tuesday due to soreness in his abdominal region. He should return to the lineup later this week. March 2, 8:00 a.m CST
- Matt Cain had an MRI Wednesday after experiencing inflammation in his right elbow last Sunday. The MRI revealed no structural damage. Both Cain and the Giants are downplaying the injury, but he’s likely to miss at least one turn in the spring rotation. March 3, 1:00 p.m. CST
